On My Soapbox

soap-447657_1920You know what’s not nice about liquid soaps? The excess packaging (think about where the plastic ends up…), and the use of petroleum and DEA, synthetics and chemicals . On the other hand is there anything more delicious looking, within the non-food categories of course, than the new Irish handmade bar soaps? I am completely taken in by these beautiful soaps full of natural oils and essential oils and cocoa and shea butters, coconut oil, gorgeous subtle smells and fresh vibrant colors.

Nia Intensives Scrub Bar is one I came across when I first set up the Irish Skincare BeautyBox; www.alainn.ie.  Made in County Clare. The Intensive Scrub Bar is one of the products in the February Irish Beautybox.

It’s not what I consider a typical soap, I use it as a body wash, scrub and a hand soap. It has a very mild rose and neroli smell and it stays as a solid block, unlike a typical mass produced soap which often breaks or disintegrates and becomes messy when wet, the Nia soap stays solid, like new.  The main ingredients in the Intensive Scrub Bar are poppy seeds, coconut oil, coconut milk and cocoa butter. The poppy seeds are a natural gentle exfoliant and cocoa butter and coconut milk and oil act as the moisturiser. This beautiful soap is rejuvenating and nourishing.

MianraSoaps, made in Cork, has a lot going on, they just received a hefty grant from Enterprise Ireland,  which is a positive nod to the Mianra products. These soaps look and smell exquisite.  I found these at a local market in Cork city and I have been a fan ever since.  The raspberry and vanilla flavor was my first choice, but there are so many delicious looking products with plum and rum, chai and cocoa butter, it’s difficult to pick a favorite. These are luxury and natural, spa-like and just lovely products.

I received a beautiful gift from a friend for my birthday; soaps from Kildare company – Bareessentials.ie .Where to start with this one, my soaps came in a gorgeous sleek brown gift box (one of my favorite colors). The box contained several little soap bars, each one was a different stunning colors.  Their tagline is “the art of soap” and these little bars were like art, I thought about leaving them on the coffee table for us to admire or photograph for a while, but I could not resist using them. The scents were divine and using them was a delicious pleasure, something I never thought I would say about a bar of soap.

Gone are the days of soaps that cake and break, the Irish handmade soaps on the market are high quality and decadent.  Have you tried some irrestibable Irish handmade soaps that you would recommend?

Treat yourself this February

valentine-1196993_1920So the Hallmark V-Day is almost here and the stress of finding the perfect gift is kicking in.  The stores are, of course, filled with red heart cards, ILoveYou balloons, pretend flowers and real flowers.  Every year it lasts a day and it’s the same the world over.  This year treat yourself with a gift that last longer than a day and is considered the ultimate pampering treat – The Irish Skincare Beauty Box from www.alainn.ie

There are several beauty boxes on the market in Ireland, some ship skincare from the big global corporations, others ship cosmetic samples from other big global corporations.  Only one ships natural, pure and beautiful Irish skincare products.

www.alainn.ie is the only beauty box that ships Irish products.  Yes!  We only ship Irish skincare in our boxes.  This means we support the Irish economy, the small Irish skincare businesses and just as important you know when you like the products in our boxes you can purchase them locally when you want a refill.  We are very fussy about which products we ship to our customers.  All items are guaranteed Irish, 100% natural, and contain no bad stuff like Parabens and Alcohol

Inside the alainn.ie boxes you will receive 4 full size Irish made skincare products, regularly we also pop in some travel size products and maybe an Irish made chocolate.  Our products are natural, organic, pure and 100% Irish made.   We include body oil with coconut and sweet almond oil, body scrubs and body butters with Vitamin E, face creams with Jojoba and Argan oil, hand creams with avocado and shea butter, and lots more antioxidant rich, and natural products.  You will not receive the same product a second time and as we ship every second month you will have plenty time to try out the beautiful goodies in the box before you receive your next delivery.

Sign up for the Irish Skincare subscription service and receive a beautybox every two months (6 times a year) or sign up for a once off box or gift for a friend.  We deliver to your door and we love to receive your feedback and comments.

There’s something for every Irish skincare advocate, and every one expecting a little more than a bunch of flowers on this Valentine’s day, in the Irish Skincare Beautybox.

Pucker Up and Balm

lip-1147365_1920I like lips, especially my own lips.  I had a lipstick addiction for years. Not knowing then that most lipsticks contain harsh chemicals and bad stuff like lead, coal tar and mineral oil. In other words most lipsticks are not natural or organic.  I’m happy to be corrected on this though, so a free Alainn.ie skincare box to anybody who can find me a chemical free lipstick, must be Irish made of course.  Comments below please…

One of my favorite people to follow on Instagram is @CATULIFE, I came across this account when searching for natural and organic skincare. Her posts range from how to make your own anti-aging eye cream to oil pulling. The most interesting for me though are the lips posts.  One on how to make your own lipstick, all natural, and another on how to make your own lipbalm.  The main ingredients in her lipstick and lipbalm are coconut oil and shea butter. Luckily my favorite lip moisturizers include both of these essential ingredients already.

lips4So until I break into the organic lipstick business i.e. make my own, I will continue with my favorite moisturizing lipbalms which of course are all Irish made and full of good stuff:

  • Blumain Organic Skincare Coconut Lip Balm which shipped in the first Alainn.ie beauty box includes  Cocoa and Shea Butter and Avocado oil. This is like silk on your lips and lasts for hours.  In fact I believe this product has healing properties that may not be advertised yet – a friend and customer (friend first, then customer…) told me she had an alergic reaction to an ingredient in a dish cooked for her and this coconut lipbalm was the only thing that cleared her irritated lips – true story!  A great reinforcement for natural and organic ingredients.
  • Riona Natural Skincare Lip Balm with its smooth silky texture, its addictive, in a good way. Full of vitamin E and all natural, this is luscious and hydrating. This mint and vanilla balm was a great addition to the Christmas Alainn.ie beauty box.
  • Lucyssoapkitchen.com Chocolate Luxury Lipbalm. This gem will be in the February Alainn.ie beauty box, added especially for Valentines day with cocoa and coconut flavours.  This is just fabulous, in a cute little pink sliding tin. Made with organic cocoa butter and organic coconut oil and vitamin E.

Now for some lip trivia:

Did you know you can get your lips tattooed? Seriously.  Now I’ve always been an admirer of a good tat but on the lips is a needle too far for me. Lip liner tattoos.

Did you know some place in the work somebody created a group for lipbalm addiction. Check it out here: lipbalmanonymous

Stop Comparing yourself to others

“Comparison is the thief of joy”- Theodore Roosevelt

Comparing yourself to others is such a common thing I think it human nature! Self confidence can be one of those things that people may have lots of or be lacking. I am not surprised because social media has become a major thing in our life’s and your seeing different types of things and comparing your life to there’s. With social media, comparing ourselves to others, it’s in our face now more than ever before!

When we were younger you would remember coming home saying “Everyone else in my class has a phone why can’t I?” Or “So and So has it, why can’t I?”… and I remember my mother saying “Don’t compare yourself to them because your not them!” And that has stuck in my head, always! Now a days its things like your cup of tea in bed…

Buying Irish for Christmas, great blog…

Every year I decide I am going to buy Irish, and most years I end up frantically running around British chain stores and just buying things because they are there and I know they’ll “do”.

This year, for two reasons – more time at home with the small chap and less time in the city near actual bricks and mortar shops – I am buying a lot online, but there are great Irish options where you know you’re supporting a small business. The way things have gone this year internationally, and given what we know about large corporations and tax, I figure the extra effort is a small price to pay to ensure some bit of fairness.

It means buying vouchers for local businesses – so far so easy – but also sourcing things like books, electronics and beauty products from Irish vendors. With books and beauty products (though sadly…

The Irish Beauty Box – September Edition

www.alainn.ie

sept-alainnWhat a month it has been!  Sourcing and working with suppliers of Irish products has been a pleasure.  Getting those products into the September box on time for shipping was not difficult and seeing the great reviews from the alainn.ie customers and bloggers was very satisfying.

Karora Tan is the tan used by most Irish people I know, including myself.  I love the texture and how easy it is to apply.  The Karora Glow Glamster is perfect for a one day tan, true to it’s name it glows and it washes off easily.

The Nima brush, the Yvonne, is one useful brush for eye liner, and what a great Irish company, owned by Niamh Martin.  Check out her website: http://www.nimabrush.com to see the full range, but also stay close to http://www.alainn.ie because we are not done with the nimabrush range yet.

Blumainorganicskincare based in Ballydesmond, County Cork use the most natural and organic products, the oil cleanser is award winning and it is easy to see  why.  I love it, and the reviews have been five star.  And the lip balm!  It has coconut and avocado, my two favorite oils.

Bia Beauty is another one we will see more of in alainn.ie.  This company is a pleasure to work with and I mentioned in a previous blog about skincare good enough to eat, that is what I think of when I hear Bia Beauty.

We had a great response to this first Irish Beauty Box. I am very happy to promote Irish skincare products and it’s great to see Irish people looking to buy Irish products and supporting Irish skincare.

We have started planning for October already and I cannot wait to get that box out there, more quality Irish products.  Some well known and some new to the market.

Oh and some surprises along the way also.
